From a residents' family - Heatherdale

"I was amazed at how quickly my mum adapted and from the very start I have been impressed with the care she, and everyone else at Heatherdale, receives." - Kay Walker

After the latest in a number of falls at home, Kay Walker realised that after ten years looking after her 87-year-old mum Doris Hearson, the time had come to find her a care home.

At the time of the fall Kay had also been diagnosed with breast cancer and knew that it would now be even more difficult to devote the time needed to look after Doris, who lived just 30 yards from her.

Living in Broomhill, Northumberland, Kay was aware that Heatherdale, a home owned by Wellburn Care Homes, was just half a mile away and she also personally knew many of the staff who worked there.

After visiting the home and talking to staff, Kay very quickly realised this was the right home for Doris, but the final decision would rest with her mum.

Much to Kay's relief, Doris indicated she knew the time was right to go into a home, saying to her care worker: "My daughter has looked after me long enough."

Doris moved in to Heatherdale in July 2010 and very quickly settled into her new surroundings.

Kay said: "I was amazed at how quickly my mum adapted and from the very start I have been very impressed with the care she, and everyone else at Heatherdale, receives."

"Just because Heatherdale was the closest care home doesn't mean it was always going to be my first choice, but once I visited it and the fact I knew so many of the people who work there, made it an easy decision for me."

"Mum spends most of her day out of her room and she gets involved with many of the activities. She thinks the food is absolutely marvellous and is delighted at how varied and frequent the meals are."
